FATAL HARMONY by Anne Malcom

Title: Fatal Harmony
Series: The Vein Chronicles #1
Author: Anne Malcom
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: January 31, 2017

I may be the villain of the story, but at least I get a leading role.

Evil is a term thrown around history and literature as if it's something so easily definable. A concept to fight against.

Evil doesn’t exist.

Neither does ‘good.’

Vampires do, though.

I just happen to be one.

I’ve cruised through the centuries managing to avoid all the wars, supernatural and human, but still going to all the best parties.

I would say I avoided bloodshed, but it’s kind of part of the whole ‘vampire’ thing.

I’ve lived on the fringes of a society that considered cruelty and sadism favorable character traits for almost five hundred years. Now I'm in the middle of a war that might just put my nonbeating heart in a lot of danger.

Battles, I can handle.

The impossible attraction between me and the vampire slayer, not to mention the penetrating gaze of the king of our race, on the other hand?

I might not get out undead.

“Don’t have a best friend that’s a girl” — this was the advice from my older cousin. I didn’t take it. Because he followed with, “friends don’t f*ck friends. And you’ll want to f*ck her.”

It was terrible advice.

My cousin should’ve told me that being best friends with Baylee Wright — since she was twelve — would be the best and worst decision of my life.

He should have told me to protect her from what was coming.

He should have told me that when a darkness crawled towards us, there’d be no safety net.

Now I’ve signed back on to the same Vegas acrobatic show as Baylee, working together for the first time in years. And she tells me that she’s having trouble in a certain “area” of her life — because of our past.

“You can help me fix it,” she says.

And then she hands me a list.

CRUSH ME by Stasia Black

From the very beginning, I suspected I was making a bargain with the devil. I accepted Bryce Gentry’s position as his personal assistant knowing there was more to the job than answering emails and taking meeting notes. I mean, so what if he likes to watch me do my office work without my shirt on? No big deal. All I care about is making ends meet and taking care of my son. But Gentry seems determined to make me a pawn in his personal vendettas and power plays.

And then there’s Gentry’s handsome former collaborator and current rival: Jackson Vale. Jackson makes me FEEL. He makes me feel alive. Feel sexy. Feel in control and out of control at the same time. He makes me want a future when I can barely manage the day to day.

For a girl like me, it’s dangerous to want. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in this life, it’s to never put my heart on the line.

The stakes of these games are getting too high, too fast. It was just supposed to be a job. But now I’m stuck between two men intent on destroying one another. Will I make it out of this with my heart, soul, and body intact, or will this CRUSH ME?

I've told y'all before that I love anthologies right? Because I do. I really do. I love getting a taste of what each other has to offer. I love the different voices we get to read/hear in one book. I love how diverse it shows that romance can be. So many people who don't read romance, or don't have a fine appreciation for it, view romance stories as pretty one-dimensional. I can't tell you how many times I've witnessed people roll their eyes when they realize I'm reading yet another romance novel. For all those naysayers, READ A ROMANCE ANTHOLOGY!! Especially one of the 1001 Dark Nights bundles. Because they're amazing. Each and every single one of them.

I absolutely loved this story. LOVED IT!! Being inside Sebastian's head (Bash) was a blast! He made me think, laugh, swoon, and gasp from the intensity of his feelings. Whether he was helping a woman find her inner warrior, figuring out what he really wanted out of life, casually observing the behaviour of complete strangers, or falling in love with Penny, there was never a dull moment. And damn, but Bash was incredibly hot when it came to the bedroom. Or floor. Or wall. Or shower.

Honestly, I could continue to rave on and on about the gloriousness of this story, but I won't. Because I gave this 5 stars and that should be enough to let you know how awesome I think it was. And should give you some incentive to try the book out for yourself. Enjoy!

Review: Some Sort of Happy

Some Sort of Happy Some Sort of Happy by Melanie Harlow
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was truly a work of beauty. It was open and honest, heartwarming and endearing, and heartbreakingly real. I couldn't help but fall in love with these characters and their story and become invested in their happily ever after.

As much as I came to enjoy Skylar and her charming inner monologues, Sebastian was the one who mattered the most to me. How could he not when I found pieces of me in him? I suffer from high anxiety due to some traumatic events in my past and there are times when my OCD gets a little hard to handle. But over recent years, through lots of therapy, I've gotten better. Never cured but manageable. So I could definitely relate to Sebastian. Ha, his number is 8 and mine is 6! Although OCD manifests itself in different ways for different people, I really enjoyed this glimpse into a realistic character trying to cope with it.

This story was about two people at the cusp of starting over. The buildup of their increasing connection was altogether adorable, engaging, and hot damn can this author write erotic scenes! Sebastian and Skylar were so hot together and their chemistry was further proof of how they were destined to be. Each interaction was another testament to how beautiful and believable they were.

I loved how Melanie Harlow wrote this story. It was uncomfortably accurate and incredibly sensitive. I loved Skylar's easy acceptance of each of Sebastian's "quirks". How she supported him , helped to guide him, and simply loved him unconditionally. In all honesty, I cheered each time Sebastian overcame each of his self-imposed obstacles and I know that it was all due to the way the author phrased each scene and painted each picture. I was satisfied with where this couple ended up, even if I can't help but want more.

Review: Dance of Desire

Dance of Desire Dance of Desire by Christopher Rice
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So I've read something from Christopher Rice before, but it was a thriller. Kinda what I expected from him. And his mother. But when I heard that he had branched out into contemporary work, I had to see what's what. This book was PHENOMENAL!!

This story started out with heartbreak but I soon found solace in the forbidden love of Amber and Caleb. After being torn apart soon after falling in love, many years later they were finally free to pursue and explore their feelings and it was beautiful. And oh so freaking hot!! The plot was well-developed, I enjoyed the taboo backstory of the characters, and I laughed SO much over their antics throughout. I'm just saying... Caleb's guitar playing by the pool scene was HILARIOUS!!

Review: Searching for Mine

Searching for Mine Searching for Mine by Jennifer Probst
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

At 38 years old, Connor Dunkle is set to complete his last semester of college. He's that much closer to getting his degree and qualifying for a managerial position within the construction company he works for. If only he could bring his grade up in English. It seems his professor, Ella Blake, who comes across as dowdy and repressed, really has it out for him with all of the F's she keeps handing out. Ella challenges him, both academically and personally, to dig deeper, find substance, and get real. I enjoyed every minute of this enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romance. It was wonderful to see Connor learn to see beyond the surface of everything.

Review: Blood on the Bayou

Blood on the Bayou Blood on the Bayou by Heather Graham
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bodies have turned up in the swamps of Louisiana and the general public is convinced that the rougarou has come back to kill once again. It's up to Quinn and Danni, with the help of their supportive crew, to distinguish fact from legend and catch a killer. This story was creepy, mysterious, and a fast-paced whodunit.

Although it was pretty short, it was jam-packed with what are considered facts by the locals. Legends, myths, cultural phenomenon, whatever you want to call it, the author brought all of that to this story and I found it so intriguing. It added a certain spice to the story, that's for sure!

Hailey and Sloane's happily ever after was hard won. Shoot the battle had started before they'd even me. They both carried those battle scars and the weight wasn't only physical. Friends for years, they had circled around each other and fought against their inevitability. Finally giving in to their feelings, they had to put their ghosts to rest, accept their flaws, and learn to count on each other for love, support and acceptance. Review: Hot and Cold

Hot and Cold Hot and Cold by Mikey Lee
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5 "I got to see Seth Lane again" stars!!

The story starts of with us immediately being thrust into a crime scene, which I really enjoyed. There's a fire with an obvious murder victim and Scott, an arson investigator, and Clayton, a homicide detective, are called to the scene. These two have to work together to solve the crime because one scene turns into two and they've got to stop a serial killer before more bodies pile up. This made for an interesting plot because I'm such a sucker for a mystery/suspense/thriller.

However, there was a romantic theme throughout the story as well, which involved Scott and Clayton's sister, Dani. Having recently dealt with a trauma that had left her scared of her own shadow, Dani wasn't prepared for her immediate attraction to Scott. Luckily Scott was just as drawn to her and with the help of her brother, he helped her feel safe and comfortable in his company. Their relationship strangely blossomed in the midst of the murder investigation.

The reasons I didn't' rate this book higher were:
❧ the lack of details re: Dani's assault. It was mentioned and there was obviously a fallout, but the details were limited. The fact that it was brought up in the first place, I thought it would hold more of an impact.
❧ the writing wasn't completely fluid. There were POV changes within the same paragraph which made it a bit difficult to keep up with.

In the end, these issues were pretty minor and only slightly detracted from my overall enjoyment of this book. If you're looking for a fairly light and suspenseful read, give HOT AND COLD a read.
