Consequence by Rachel Higginson
Consequence, the conclusion to Sayer and Caroline’s epic love story

Five years ago, I escaped a dangerous life I had always wanted to leave. I got away. I found freedom. But it cost me the love of my life.

For five years I lived in hiding, protecting my most valuable secret while Sayer Wesley sat in prison paying for both our sins. I promised to love him forever. I promised to never leave him.

I broke my promises.

Five months ago Sayer found me.

Five weeks ago, I was forced to face my past.

Five days ago, someone took my daughter. They kidnapped her in order to make Sayer and me suffer. I will do anything to get her back. Even if that means coming clean to Sayer, letting him into my life and introducing him to our daughter.

All I wanted was to protect her from this life and now she’s right in the middle of the chaos. Sayer is the only one that can help me. He’s the only one that can get her back.

But it might mean losing him again.

Fifteen years ago, I fell in love with Sayer Wesley. Now I must pay the consequences for falling in love with a con man.

REVIEW

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Consequence was a different type of story than the first part. It was high in intensity and had far much more action than Constant. There was much more mafia involvement as the characters tried to navigate their way to survival. Who do they trust? And will their con work?

I loved how the author drew me into this story and had me wanting to run in the other direction. My fear for these characters was profound, and although I knew that things HAD to work out for the better, getting to the happy ending was a thrilling and suspenseful ride. I loved Sayer in this book and I couldn’t get enough of Gus. I’m hoping he makes it into a book of his own some day. I’m so glad with the way things ended up for Atticus - just desserts, my friend.

There was one question that kept running through my mind while reading this story: when did Sayer ever give Caroline a reason to doubt him? Seriously. She never believed his words or his actions. She constantly questioned his motives. But I couldn’t find a time when he lied to her or was against her. So why was she allowed to get away with treating him like crap? Why??? So did I like her any better this time around? Nope. I hated her more. She was rude, immature and quite frankly, I really wanted Sayer to leave her the heck alone. I wanted her to flounder around trying to defeat the mafia all by herself. Since she craved her independence so much and thought Sayer deserved her distrust, she should have done everything alone. See how far she got. HATED HER!!
