Five years ago when she left, she broke my heart. No warning. No hey, this isn’t working out. No nothing. Just poof. One day she’s there, in my bed, and we’re talking about our futures. The next, she’s gone.
So when she shows up five years later and acts like she didn’t leave me with a broken heart, I get angry. So. Freakin’. Angry.
Of course, this is where I spiral. When we went through medical school together, we were on equal footing. Not anymore. Now I’m her attending, and I’ve made it my personal mission to make her life hell.
She wants to finish up her residency and finally become a doctor? Well, she’ll have to go through every single bad thing I can throw at her, first.
Seeping, maggot-infested, pus-filled bed sore? Yep, that’s hers to take care of. Man sh*tting every three seconds uncontrollably? That’s also hers. Man and woman having a baby while also in the throes of a divorce? You guessed it. Hers.
If I can make her leave after what she put me through, I’ll feel accomplished.
Only problem is, I forgot how determined Valhalla Singh was. Guess she’ll be reminding me.
Because Valhalla wasn’t named that for nothing.

"I never hated you, Felix.
And I never will.
There's nothing you can do to change that."

Even when they were bickering and sniping, or just plain trying to avoid each other, there was no denying the lasting connection between Val and Felix.

They were once a couple, finding their way to forever... and then they were not. When Val's father died, leaving a caveat in his will to force his children back to the circus, she and Felix made a plan to work around her new schedule. But things didn't work out that way and both thought the other had thoroughly abandoned them. All I wanted was for them to finally have a conversation, and when they did, it was amazing to see how fast everything worked out.

Well... sorta.

This was an entertaining read and I found myself amused by a character who tried to cause trouble.

"I will put you in a trunk and help people look for you. Try me." —Text from Val to Tammy

I found it so very easy to like Val and Felix. They were such warm and fun characters and their story was both emotional and realistic. Will Keene be next or will we watch Zip fall first?

Series Review // When I Break by Kendall Ryan

When I Break by Kendall Ryan

Today's flashback is the When I Break series by Kendall Ryan. It's been almost 8 years since I read these books, but they made me fall in love with this author's writing. This series deals with an alpha hero with a sex addiction and the naive young woman who will be there for him.

1. When I Break

What happens when a sex addict falls for a virgin?

Fighting to fill the emptiness inside himself, Knox Bauer seeks solace in unfamiliar beds with unfamiliar women. As guardian to his three younger brothers, this can't go on...they look up to him in every way and all he’s done lately is prove how messed up he really is. Needing a change, he attends a local Sex Addicts Anonymous meeting, where he meets the alluring McKenna.

Rating -

I'm going to be honest and it goes against what most reviewers posted, but I liked Knox. Kenna not so much. Here's why. I felt that Knox was real. He didn't deny that he's broken, messed up, struggling, etc. Not once. We knew he was a mess from the first bit. But Kenna was living in the land of denial. She was a therapist and one of the things she spoke about was that the first step was admitting you had a problem. She needed to practice what she preached. She was hiding from life. She lost her parents in a tragic accident, but instead of living her life to the fullest, as her parents would want her to, she won't even touch the money they left for her. She'd rather struggle and 'enjoy' a friendless life. She does have one friend, Brian, but she shows no appreciation for him. She seemed to resent him. So yeah, there are many reasons I don't like this girl but I will continue to read the series for Knox.

BTW, why the heck is she surprised when Knox sleeps with women? You are a therapist for sex addicts correct? He is a member of your support group is he not? He's a freaking sex addict so what did she expect??? That he would be swept away by how great she is and stop, just like that? It's not like she's giving him sex. Get real. I don't blame him at all.

When I Surrender by Kendall Ryan

2. When I Surrender

Undaunted by Knox's complicated history with sexual addiction, McKenna pushes forward in her relationship with this deliciously flawed man. She experiences the highest highs as they discover each other, along with the lowest lows, and worries that his past may not be entirely behind him.

But when a complication from her own past demands attention, she's forced to decide where their relationship is headed, and everything she thought she knew is questioned.

Rating -

I've gotta say that by the end of the book, I had a newfound appreciation for Kenna's character. It was already established that she was sweet, kind, self-sacrificing, etc. But now that she's confronted her grief over losing her parents, I think this character can only improve. I'm glad that she and Brian seem to be recapturing their lost friendship. I feel bad for what he's going through but it seems to have brought these besties closer.

I still love Knox. The effort he's making to be a better man and role model for his brothers, only serve to further endear him to me. I'm not sure what to make of the ending. Really, what's the deal with this Amanda person?? Guess I have to read the third book to find out.

When We Fall by Kendall Ryan

3. When We Fall

The mistakes and secrets of their pasts have caught up to them and threaten their future happiness. Can McKenna trust that Knox’s sexual addiction is behind him and make a life with this beautifully troubled man? And when Knox reveals the full truth about his past, will McKenna be able to put her own fears aside and accept him?

Rating -

It was kind of weird to read a Knox that was all swoon-y but I liked it!! He got in touch with his heart and it paid off in a big way for Kenna. Once again, Kendall Ryan has won me over with an alpha - dominant with heaps of sexy and sweet. The sexy scenes were off the charts hot though I much preferred Knox's POV. Overall, this series touched on some serious issues (drunk driving, addiction) but kept it light.

Big Nick Energy is a compilation of things that I’ve written as companion pieces to already published novels.

Get updates on your favorite couples during COVID-19. These stories were written in the very first weeks of the Covid-19 Pandemic. You’ll see some of your favorite couples as they navigate that time period. Their coping mechanisms to being locked down can be kind of…flamboyant.

You’ll get some of the ‘rest of the story’ from Banner and Perry’s new life together far away from their family and friends. But don’t worry, big, rich, all grown up and famous Slone and Titus make appearances in their update. You’ll also get the story between Blue and Titus that you’ve been waiting for in Titus’s very own short story.

But don’t despair, Viddy and Trance, as well as their kids, have their own Christmas story, too!

Big Nick Energy by Lani Lynn Vale

I love when you adore a particular author's writing, fall in love with all of their characters, and want more. And when an author gifts you with that more? *chef's kiss*

That's what I got with Big Nick Energy. I got the chance to visit some of my favourite people EVER and I still want more. LLV creates such vibrant, warm, and amazing characters. People who feel as real as the people in our lives. They're full of heart and their emotions, good or bad, are genuinely felt as you read.

This was such an unexpected yet incredibly wanted gift for the holidays!

Series Review // Ruthless People by J.J. McAvoy

Ruthless People series by J.J. McAvoy

Today's flashback is the Ruthless People series by J.J. McAvoy. This was my first foray into this author's work and I was blown away with the world she created for these two rival mafias ruling Chicago. This is the story of Melody and Liam, their arranged marriage, and everything that they grew to be. They started out as enemies, each the heir to a kingdom, eventually joining forces to rule together. It's a story full of chaos, death, drama, family and love.

All of these stories are told in either dual or multiple first person perspectives. The heat ranges from descriptive to almost explicit and there is a happy ending.

I read this series many years ago and can still remember how amazing it was. Have you ever read these books? Are you interested?

Please Note: I had intended to read this author's Children of Vice series after this, but I chose not to and will continue not to because readers, whom I trust, have advised me not to. To leave the love I have for these characters right here, to remember them this way. Supposedly the author ruined everything LOL.

Ruthless People by JJ McAvoy

1. Ruthless People

To the outside world, they look like American Royalty, giving to charities, feeding the homeless, rebuilding the city. But behind closed doors is a constant battle for dominance between two Bosses, cultures, and hearts. Ruthless People is a romantic crime fiction set in modern day Chicago, and follows the life and marriage of Melody Giovanni and Liam Callahan-rivals by blood and leaders through fear. Their marriage, arranged by their fathers in hopes to end years of bloodshed between the Irish and the Italians. Liam believes he's getting a simple-minded wife, one he can control, one who bends to his every need . . . the complete opposite of Melody. She knows exactly what type of man he is, and would rather die than give up the power she has spent her life building. The Mafia of the past has evolved, and with rival bosses gunning for them, Melody and Liam will have to learn to work as one to take down those who stand in their way.

Rating - ★★★★★

This book was fan-freaking-tastic!! I LOVED every single minute of it!! I know I'm twisted, but everything Liam did was beautiful to me. His character made me all swoon-y. I'm not sure what screw is loose in my brain, but even in torture and killing mode, he was extremely hot. And the way that he loves Melody, though a tad obsessive, possessive, and manipulative, was incredibly sweet. Speaking of Melody, she was truly a lioness. Beautiful and lethal. Her coldness put me off a bit but in no way took away from my respect for how strong a character she was. I love strong female roles and JJ McAvoy nailed it here. I'm glad that she was able to love Liam right back (in their own twisted but sexy and endearing way).

I can't believe JJ started writing this in her first year in college. That's amazing!! This author is truly talented. I've already got book 2 so that's what's next!

The Untouchables by JJ McAvoy

2. The Untouchables

Everything Melody Callahan has ever been told about her past is a lie. Her father lied. Her husband lied. But like all secrets…they come out. Not only is her mother, Aviela, alive but she won’t stop until she tears down everything Liam and Melody have spent the past year building.

With a new target on their back and the media now focused on their family as the Presidential election approaches, Liam and Melody must fight on two battlefronts. Melody is torn between being in love with Liam and wanting to kill him for lying to her. Being in love and showing love are two different things in her world. Liam wants to do anything to protect his family even if that means hurting the people he loves.

Family is everything… but what happens when they’re out for your blood? Everything they have been through is nothing compared to what is coming...

Rating - ★★★★★

This series just keeps getting better!! This installment had me on tenterhooks. I was giddy, anxious, nervous, happy, sad, mad, and every other emotion in between. That's what these books have done. Drawn out my emotions in such a way that I'm IN the story. I feel everything.

I tried to explain this series to one of my daughters. She wanted to know if the H and h were the good guys. I then had to explain that Liam and Melody were actually bad guys. That's kind of a given considering they were Mafia bosses. However, they are the best of the bad guys and I love them for that. They have a love for family and exist by an honour code. And their rules are absolutely hilarious!! I think that appeased her curiosity.

Honestly, this book was amazing. Melody's mother, Aviela, is gunning for both Liam and Melody. And she stops at nothing!! She's more ruthless than Melody (if that can be believed). There's a new baby in the house (sweet part of the storyline). There's a mole in the house. A family member is not acting like family. Liam and Melody are more in love than ever. And there's lots of killing and torture too. Awesome!!

American Savages by JJ McAvoy

3. American Savages

Melody is nowhere to be found, Liam is in jail, and the Callahan family is cracking, just as Avian Doers, the FBI Director and puppet master behind their downfall, planned.

But just because they’re down doesn't mean they’re out. To fight back, Liam and Melody will have to put everything on the line. The kid gloves are coming off, and no one is getting out alive. Nothing will compare to the reign of terror that is about to envelope the entire country. First they were Ruthless, now they are pure Savages. The end is here, and no one is safe…

Rating - ★★★★★

I swear that reading this series was like watching a really good Mafia, political, FBI, police thriller. It's got everything!! An amazing couple (Liam and Melody) who quantify dysfunction. They love each other so much but they're the Bosses of the largest mob! It's got sociopaths out the yingyang. There's action, suspense, torture, betrayal, justice, and also a lot of love. I am so sad to say goodbye to these characters. I honestly did not want this book to end. I feel a little lost right now trying to think of what book to read next. This series set me up with pretty high expectations. The epilogue was awesome!! Another job well done JJ McAvoy!!

A Bloody Kingdom by JJ McAvoy

4. A Bloody Kingdom

It has been eight years since the Callahans defeated Avian Doers and conquered Chicago. Melody is now the Governor and public face of the family, while Liam rises as the Ceann na Conairte of both the Irish and Italians.

Their reach is limitless; their power endless...but is it possible to have too much power? Can Liam and Melody raise a family, a city, and an empire?

Only a fool would try to stop them now....

Rating - ★★★★

It's been a long time since I was swimming in the debauched lives that Liam and Melody led. They're still the bosses running the criminal underground of Chicago. Liam's the face while Melody acts legit as the Governor. They were a bit soft with age and kids, but the lethal edge that always existed with these characters was still just as sharp. The story was utter chaos. I had no idea what would happen next and can admit that I was very surprised by some events. I loved getting the voices of the family as points of view. Everyone had something valuable to say and it gave this last book the family touch that I didn't even know would be necessary.

I'm not a huge fan of the way this story ended. I wanted more for these characters who ruled my life in so many ways. I'm hoping whatever was missing can be found in the legacy books the author released. I want more of Melody and Liam and hope to catch a glimpse of them there.

Review // Moonshot, Hell's Kitchen, and Undeniably You

December 06, 2023

One of the things I love about the bookish world is that one book can evoke different feelings in all sorts of readers. One book can be a five-star read for me and a DNF for someone else. We all see something different because we're all different and I love exploring those differences by reading reviews.

Full disclosure: I read these books years ago, but I do remember enjoying them. Have you read them? Are you interested?

Moonshot by Alessandra Torre

Moonshot by Alessandra Torre

Contemporary Sports Romance / dual pov / second chance

I grew up in an major league baseball dugout. The daughter of a famous pitcher, I was a little sister to every man on the team. A little sister they would fight to protect.

Chase Stern was the hottest rookie the MLB had ever seen and had sex appeal as lethal as his swing. He played like a God, partied like a Devil, and was the magic ingredient our team needed.

Chase knew he should stay away from me. He didn’t.

I tried to resist him. I couldn't.

And my first fall into love was incredible, every moment of it, until it wasn’t.

Four years later, I’m no longer in the dugout. I’m in the owner’s box, with a ring on my finger. The last thing I need in my life is Chase’s return but our team is losing. We need his bat. We need his arm.

I don’t need him to look at me. Or say my name. Or reach for me.

Maybe he’s forgotten me. Maybe the love that still burns in my heart has faded from his.

Or maybe our implosion is just now beginning.

Rating - ★★★★

This book was as beautifully written as I have come to expect from this author. I was immediately drawn into the story, and despite not knowing much about baseball, I found it all interesting. My dad and best friend are baseball fanatics and got quite sick of me pretending I was knowledgeable all because I read this book lol. Yes, I did try to talk like I knew something!

I loved the earlier connection between Chase and Ty. I love when characters are shown to have a rich, deep history that solidifies the bond we're supposed to assume they share. The development of their friendship/relationship was slow and sweet. Thankfully I felt a strong connection to that part of story because I couldn't stand Ty all that much later on. I just couldn't believe her ass. I started to doubt her authenticity. I didn't really feel the love. So the last third of the book, for me, was a bit... meh.

I really liked the suspenseful undertone of the story but I wanted something more from it. I'm not sure what I was looking for but I felt like something was missing. I wanted more of the craziness I guess.

I loved Chase. I liked Ty. I liked their story.

Hell's Kitchen by Callie Hart and Lily St. Germain

Can you imagine how pissed I was when I got to the end of this book???

Ha ha... cute and creepy at the same time huh?

This book was so freaking AMAZING and book 2 still hasn't been released!! I'm angry!!

Honestly, I'm not sure what I imagined or expected when I saw that these two fantastic authors would be collaborating on a new series. I just assumed it would be great. THEY DELIVERED!!

I got to see Zeth and Sloane. I saw Jace and Julz. And how hot were the additions of Sal and Theo Barbieri??? Those two brothers brought the funny and had me laughing my ass off.

There was action, suspense, drama, sex, sarcasm, badassness, hilarity, and all the other good sh!t that can be found in the works of these writers.

I guess I'll just patiently wait for the next book in the series.

NOTE: I was never able to continue this series because it literally disappeared from the web. I couldn't and still can't purchase the other books :(

Rating - ★★★★1/2

Contemporary Romance / cheating / emotional

Jewel E. Ann has a remarkable gift in creating stories that evoke pretty strong emotions. While reading this I laughed, cried sadly and pathetically, screamed, scratched my head baffled, and cried tears of happiness. This story had me upside down and backwards. At one point I wasn't sure a HEA was guaranteed for Lautner and Sydney. I wondered if I'd be treated to one of those bittersweet endings that I can't stand and silently complain about. Thankfully that was not the case. Phew! Despite Claire, Rose, Emma and Dane, love truly conquered all and did it beautifully. I wasn't sure my heart could take any more of their heartache, but at least it was worth it.
