December 22, 2020

books I want

Happy Tuesday and welcome to another TTT! This meme is hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Christmas is just 3 days away and I'm obviously distracted. I can't wait!! I don't know why watching my children open their gifts gives me so much joy :) Anyhoo, this week's TTT theme is Books I Hope Santa Brings and since I did this post last week (oops), I decided to figure out what books on the Goodreads anticipated releases lists that I would be interested in.

In no particular order...

Make It Sweet by Kristen Callihan
Release: February 23, 2021

Life for Emma isn’t good. The world knows her as Princess Anya on Dark Castle, but then her character gets the axe—literally. The cherry on top is finding her boyfriend in bed with another woman. She needs a break, and sanctuary comes in the form of Rosemont, a gorgeous estate in California promising rest and relaxation.

Then she meets the owner’s equally gorgeous grandson, ex–hockey player and current recluse Lucian Osmond, and she sees her own pain and yearning reflected in his eyes.

He’s charming when he wants to be but also secretive and gruff, with protective walls as thick as Emma’s own. Despite a growing attraction, they avoid each other.

But then there’s an impromptu nighttime skinny-dip, and Lucian’s luscious homemade tarts and cream cakes start arriving at Emma’s door, tempting her to taste life again…

In trying to stay apart, they only grow closer—and their broken pieces just might fit together and make them whole.

It's time for Eve to grow up and prove herself—even though she's not entirely sure how…

Jacob Wayne is in control. Always. The bed and breakfast owner’s on a mission to dominate the hospitality industry—and he expects nothing less than perfection. Then she hits him with her car—supposedly by accident. Yeah, right.

Now his arm is broken, his B&B is understaffed, and the dangerously unpredictable Eve is fluttering around, trying to help. Before long, she’s infiltrated his work, his kitchen—and his spare bedroom. Jacob hates everything about it. Or rather, he should. Sunny, chaotic Eve is his natural-born nemesis, but the longer these two enemies spend in close quarters, the more their animosity turns into something else. Like Eve, the heat between them is impossible to ignore—and it’s melting Jacob’s frosty exterior.

The goddess offers an alliance against their mutual enemy and, at last, a way for Lore to leave the Agon behind forever. Fear For Me by Cynthia Eden

Standalone - For Me #2
Release - November 12, 2013
Genre - Romantic Thriller
Multiple POV - 3rd person
Heat level - 3 out of 5 - one descriptive scene & one lightly descriptive one
Format/Source - ebook purchase from Amazon
Length - 358 pages
Publisher - Montlake Romance

She’s the obsession two men share: one wants her love, the other wants her life.

A shared passion for justice first brought Baton Rouge district attorney Lauren Chandler and US marshal Anthony Ross together—when each played their part in bringing down the infamous Bayou Butcher. The sparks flying between the two made it clear they weren’t just a legal dream team. Then desire had to make way for duty, and what they had was done. But it would never be over.

Five years later, it’s none other than the Butcher who gets things started again, when his shocking jailbreak reunites the lawyer and the lawman…and reignites their love. But this time, the pair is in danger of being permanently parted—by a killer with revenge on his mind, and Lauren on the top of his list. As a new wave of terror sweeps through the streets and swamps of Baton Rouge, one man will pit his boundless passion against another’s relentless hate, for the life of the woman who obsesses them both.

Wanna know what's worse than having a serial killer on the loose? Learning that there are two of them!

The Bayou Butcher has broken out of prison and he's out for revenge. And he's not alone. When those he's targeting realize that he has a partner, that maybe he's always had a partner, the hunt is even more urgent to put these killers away.

Five years ago, Anthony and Lauren had something special. However, after working a case together, despite her pleas that he stay, he knew he had to leave. But gone doesn't mean forgotten and neither of them were able to forget the other. To move past what they had. To get over those feelings. And since Anthony was the one to help put the Butcher away in the first place, it's only right that he be the one to come back to hunt him down. He's back and what he feels for Lauren is stronger than ever. This time he vows to give what they have a shot, if she'll let him. He just needs to keep her alive and catch the bad guys.

I enjoyed being in the minds of the killers. It was just as creepy and icky as it needed to be. The author did a great job of capturing how truly twisted and disgusting these men were. I will admit that I figured out my top three candidates for the partner pretty early on and one of them were the right answer. It was a load of fun seeing how it tied in. I did want more of an explanation for how these two men worked together, but I was content with what I got.

Scary and eerie, Fear For Me left me on the edge of my seat in anticipation of what would happen next and I'm looking forward to reading the next book of this series.

She closed in on Anthony. “We need to talk.”

A muscle flexed in his jaw. “Later, ma’am.” His native Georgia drawl rolled lightly beneath his words. “Right now, I have a killer to hunt.”

She grabbed his arm. Held tight. “A killer who was in my house. A killer who murdered my friend.” Karen, I am so sorry. Each time she thought of Karen, it felt as if someone were clawing open her chest. “You aren’t shutting me out, understand, Ross? I’m working this with you. I am going to make sure this city doesn’t fall back into the Bayou Butcher madness it faced before.” When fear had held them all captive.

Fear of the dark.

Fear of the monster who waited in the dark.

Jon Walker had made children—and even adults—fear the boogeyman once more. Because he truly was that monster.

“I tracked him before,” Anthony said quietly. No emotion entered his voice or his gaze. “And I can do it again.”

Without you.

Unspoken, but the words were still there, hanging between them.

She wouldn’t back down. “My office will give you any support you need. We will work together on this.” She knew the reporters were probably already swarming outside. Paul had been right on that score—a story about her, about the Bayou Butcher—hell, yes, they were talking a front-page spread.

Anthony bent toward her. His scent—rich, masculine—surrounded her. His mouth was close to her ear when he whispered. “Haven’t you already come close enough to death?”

She turned her head. Met his stare. “Haven’t you?” Because she knew the risks he took, day in and day out.

Even when he’d left her, she’d followed his career. Anthony’s cases were the darkest she’d ever encountered. Brutal killers. Sadistic criminals.

Nightmares.

“Not close enough,” he told her softly. “Not yet.” His green gaze heated as it swept over her. “I missed you.”

Then he was gone. Hurrying away with the other two men as they went out on the hunt.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia // Review

December 19, 2020

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

One could construct a hundred different narratives, it didn’t make them true.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Standalone
Release - June 30, 2020
Genre - Historical/Gothic Thriller
POV - female protagonist 1st person
Format/Source - ebook purchase
Length - 304 pages

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find—her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.

Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.

After seeing the hype surrounding Mexican Gothic, I knew I had to read it. The cover alone would have made me take a second look. And I'm glad I did.

It was a slow-moving read. Not much in the way of furthering the story really happens until towards the end. I was on edge while waiting for the other shoe to drop and enjoyed the journey. The depictions of the town, the townsfolk, the fog, the house, the mytery of the house and the people who lived in it, all made a strong impact with me. I didn't know who was truly sincere and who was hiding behind false sincerity.

I found it was more the characters themselves rather than the atmosphere illustrated by the author that gave this story its gothic feel. Noemi was hilarious and kept me engaged in this story right to the end. And what an ending! Honestly, this story should come with trigger warnings, but then again, if you were told what the triggers were, the story would be spoiled for you.

Enter at your own risk!

The letter that started it all...

… he is trying to poison me. This house is sick with rot, stinks of decay, brims with every single evil and cruel sentiment. I have tried to hold on to my wits, to keep this foulness away but I cannot and I find myself losing track of time and thoughts. Please. Please. They are cruel and unkind and they will not let me go. I bar my door but still they come, they whisper at nights and I am so afraid of these restless dead, these ghosts, fleshless things. The snake eating its tail, the foul ground beneath our feet, the false faces and false tongues, the web upon which the spider walks making the strings vibrate. I am Catalina Catalina Taboada. CATALINA. Cata, Cata come out to play. I miss Noemí. I pray I’ll see you again. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me. I cannot save myself as much as I wish to, I am bound, threads like iron through my mind and my skin and it’s there. In the walls. It does not release its hold on me so I must ask you to spring me free, cut it from me, stop them now. For God’s sake…

Hurry,

Catalina

WWW WEDNESDAY - DECEMBER 16th

December 16, 2020

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

The three W’s stand for:

What did you recently finish reading?
What are you currently reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

I still haven't picked up the pace with my reading, but I'm absolutely cool with that. I'm loving reading what I want when I want. I've spent a ton of time with my daughters (even more than usual during this forced isolation) and we're going to be starting a group read soon. I am so excited for it! I hope you've been having an amazing reading week and that your next reads are phenomenal ones.

What I've Read

A Cowboy Under the Mistletoe by Crimson Syn - 3 ★ - a dirty MC romance with the author's usual flair.
Dream Chaser by Kristen Ashley - 4 ★ - I enjoyed being back in the world of Rock Chicks and Dream Men that KA has created. Boone and Ryn had their own share of drama and entertained me well.
Cursed by N. Isabelle Blanco - 4 ★ - this was a dark and dirty paranormal story. I've loved everything this author has written.

What I'm Reading

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. What I'll Read Next

I won't lie... I'm a little embarrassed that I still have no actual plans for what I plan to read. Only a little though. For the most part, I'm enjoying the freedom.

Cursed by N. Isabelle Blanco // ARC Review

Cursed by N. Isabelle Blanco

Ice-blue eyes assess me in the coldest of ways.
My soul freezes even more.
My heart nearly disappears in a burst of molten ashes fanned by her presence.
She scares me to the core.
Fascinates me like the quintessential abyss calling my name.
I'm sure I'm not the first man to get aroused by the cause of his demise.

“They sent you here to kill me, but that’s not what you’re here to do. You’re here to own me . . .”

I let my blood hit that contract—thought it was a joke.
Later, I convinced myself it was a hallucination.
Truth is, I sold my soul.

“I awoke surrounded by death. It wasn’t long until I realized it’d all been by my hand . . . and my teeth.”

They call themselves The Bestowers.

They’ll give you the world, but it’ll come at a price.

And before they send their assassins after you, they’ll bring out the monstrous darkness within.

You’ll kill and destroy every bit of the gift they gave you, leaving nothing behind in your wake.

My time is up and they’ve chosen their most dangerous murderer to end my miserable life.

“I dreamt of her before I met her. I saw her. Tasted her. She’s a stain on my insides I can never erase.”

Her destiny isn’t to kill me, but she will own my soul.

I would’ve been better off dying by her hellish flames.

What. In. The. Actual... I don't even know where to start. This author, N. Isabelle Blanco, is a genius when it comes to creating paranormal worlds and the characters that dwell in them. There's magic and wonder mixed with raunchiness and something that vaguely resembles humanity. Reading Cursed was a bit like falling down the rabbit hole and it's a crazy drop!

Silas had lived a broken existence and when, during a drug binge, he's offered the chance at a better life, he grabs onto it with both hands. Sell his soul to have a roof over his head, food in his stomach, and the kind of security he's never known? No problem. Especially when he can convince himself that it was all a hallucination. So what happens when that 'hallucination', that 'dream', becomes all too real? You get the madness I found in Cursed.

I really enjoyed the infusion of voodoo and the Creole culture. The depictions of legendary people were amazing and it was very easy to envision this other world in New Orleans. While Silas came off as pretty pathetic due to his obsession with his witch, and she came off as incredibly abrasive and unlikeable, I couldn't get enough of their cat and mouse game. It was scorching hot! There is so much more to explore in this world that Blanco has created, between these characters and the intriguing mythical others that were introduced, and I can't wait to see what the author comes up with for them next.

Ryn Jansen has no interest in taking a risk on Boone Sadler. Thanks to a long list of men who've done nothing but let her down, Ryn vows to stay far away from the caring, protective commando. And when Boone confronts Ryn with evidence that her loved ones are conning her, Ryn is less than thrilled -- with her family and Boone. But even as Boone proves he's the kind of guy to meet her every need, she doesn't trust him to stay when life gets hard . . .

Boone Sadler's never been one to back down from a challenge. He's determined to show the funny, sexy Ryn that the irresistible connection between them is worth exploring. But caring for Ryn's heart and body becomes a matter of life and death when Ryn's beloved niece and nephew are put in danger and dirty cops begin gunning for Ryn. Soon Boone realizes their romance is in danger of more than heartbreak -- and to have any future together, they'll have to put their trust in each other.

Boone wants Ryn. Ryn wants Boone. But Ryn won't let Boone in because... well, only she knows the answer to that. It seemed, to me, that she was a bit lost with her own logic. If she didn't get it, how could I? And how could Boone? After asking and being turned away repeatedly, it's no wonder he went somewhere else. So why is Ryn all torn up about it? And why is Boone still looking out for her? And why is she mad at him for looking out for her? Ah, the drama... you were missed!

Getting into the heart of this story wouldn't be right. It needs to be experienced. You need to take this journey for yourself, to find out why Boone and Ryn were perfect for each other. You need to learn, through these words, how KA was able to capture the true essence of these characters, bringing them to life, highlighting their flaws and bestowing us with their virtues. Boone was one heck of a hero. Such a good man. And Ryn gave just as good as she got.

There was chaos, bits of suspense, familiar faces, new alliances, and the setup for what I believe will be the love story to follow -- I can't be the only one who was feeling all there was to feel with Axl and Hattie.

I don't think there's anything in the world quite like getting lost in a book by Kristen Ashley. Dream Chaser is said to be a spin-off of two of my favorite series (Dream Man and Rock Chick) and if Boone and Ryn are any indication, this seems about right. Whether it was Boone's alphaness or Ryn's independence or the camaraderie of the larger group that convinced me, it doesn't even matter. I enjoyed every word!

“Baby?”
I stopped feeling sorry for myself and focused on Boone.
His mouth came down on mine.
I thought maybe it was some weird, kinda-friends, kinda-not, should-be-lovers, but-weren’t, never-gonna-happen good-bye kiss.
I realized it was not when his tongue came out and he traced the crease of my lips with the tip.
They opened.
Really, there was no way I could have kept them closed.
Just a taste.
I’d give myself just a taste.
A taste of Boone.
Even if that tasted like never.
He slid his tongue inside, and he didn’t taste like never.
He tasted rich and decadent and heady and hot and male.
And he kissed like Boone.
Man and alpha and strength and protector and Dom.
Without a fight, without even a thought, I submitted to his tongue and his mouth and his kiss and him.
I was holding onto him, yielding to the plunder, my legs trembling, when he lifted his mouth from mine. With an eyeful of nothing but green, I heard him say, “Lock up after me, sweetheart. Get some sleep. I’ll catch you later.”
And with that, he let me go, left me swaying in my living room….
And he was gone.

When everything you want is right in front of you, but it's still out of reach… Penny Wilson has a successful business, more friends than a girl could ask for, and a boyfriend she’s madly and passionately in love with. Scott Beckley is honest, loyal, hands down the best lover on the planet, and absolutely gaga over his nieces and nephews. Scott’s a keeper…as long as Penny doesn’t ever want to hear those three magical words that would take their relationship to the next level. Scott escaped abusive parents at seventeen and was forced to find his way alone in the world. Even though it’s been more than a decade and he’s reunited with his estranged sisters and built a good life in Peaceful Harbor, Maryland, he’s still tortured by his past. Penny knows he loves her with everything he has, but for a girl who wants a family and a guy who is afraid of having one, love might not be enough.
