Dark Redemption by Aja James

For a man who felt dead inside, this woman — Clara — represented the spark of life that inspired him to keep breathing, keep walking, in the hopes that, one day, he might emerge from the darkness that ever surrounded him.
That he might feel again.

Did Aja James write a perfect villain redemption arc or what?!

I was already feeling for Enlil. He had many demons and I liked that he was finally going to confront them. To get a whole story devoted to him actually realizing the amazing male he could be... call it bliss!

All he knew was pain, sacrifice and betrayal. Anatolian males were taught from birth never to care for anything but honing their unrivaled skills as warriors. First his father. Then the first and only person to give him affection (screw you, Anu). After millenia spent alone and lonely, no wonder he felt so empty.

After severing the ties that bond, Enlil awoke with no memory. He was lost and yet he knew things. Things that made him dangerous. However, nothing in his past could have prepared him for Clara Scott. She was like a force of nature. Big-hearted, tender and kind, she was the perfect person to balance him out. He didn’t know what she saw when she stared so intently at him, but he knew what he saw: A beautiful faerie with dark red tresses, brilliant blue eyes, a curious mind, and a passionate heart.

Everything that grew between Enlil and Clara felt like magic. She was an orphan who was adopting an orphan (yes, little orphan Annie got a new mommy) and Enlil was a male with no family, no friends, no memories, and no home. She gave him everything he was missing. Passion. Life. Joy. She was all the best feelings Eli could imagine in one package, simply bursting with it. And he fulfilled her in such wonderful ways.

His beauty was so raw, so elemental and devastating, that it reached physically into her internal organs, deep into her blood and bones, and made the primitively female part of her sit up and growl—mine.

This story made me all sappy and I wish I could see a picturesque reunion scene between father and son. I think that would be the only way to improve on this perfection. Let Enlil and Ryu give each other huge bro hugs and have them mansplain their issues away so that we can all be happy together. Seriously, I can't get enough of this series and with all of the loose ends this book gave me, I have to dive into the next one.

And here are my kinda spoiler-y discussion points...

★ Who is the Pure female working both sides? I have my suspicions, especially after the whole description of bells around her ankles, but why is she doing this? What does she hope to gain? How could she betray everyone this way? When will her identity be revealed? When will everyone know? And does the author make her death especially gruesome, as she deserves?
★ It was pretty obvious that Dalair would be the latest inductee into Medusa/Anu's mindless minion brigade. However, if she no longer has her powers, how is she able to control all of these people? I can only hope he doesn't end up like Leonidas.
★ I thought for sure that we would find out more about Clara and what seems to be her own magical identity. Will this be explored in another book? Does she also possess immortality, without knowing? And will she and Enlil/Eli be part of the growing Pure and Dark alliance?
★ Will I get the scene I've been looking for... where Ryu and Enlil finally hash things out and come to some sort of understanding?
★ The Creature is evil. How the heck can he ever be redeemed? I know he is because of the spin-off series, but HOW??? He's making it hard for me to hold out hope for any kind of relationship with his family. After everything he's done and continues to do, how can he look Inanna, Ashtar and Tal in the eye. He helped to keep his father prisoner! He allowed for his torture! WTH?!

Check out the previous books:

“Your past does not define who you are, Eli,” she whispered against his mouth. The palm of one hand cupped his cheek while she pressed the other over his beleaguered heart.

“You still have the present and an uncharted future. I have seen the real you in the past couple of weeks, unburdened by birth, by title, by experience and expectations.”

She kissed him softly, tender presses upon his closed mouth. He felt the heat of her desire, but he also felt her understanding, compassion and care.

“You gave yourself a name, and it is a good one. You traced your steps here, to me and Annie. This is where you belong. In our hearts. This is who you are—the man I love.”

A shuddering sigh filled his chest as he opened his lips beneath hers, simply breathing her in.

Love me, he invited. Even though I don’t deserve it. Even though I’m afraid to accept it. I can’t stop myself from wanting it with every piece of my blackened soul.

She wet his lips with hers and swept her tongue inside, plundering all he had to offer, staking her claim.

You’re mine, her mouth said. Love is a gift given freely, and I want to give you all the love in my heart.

Slowly and deeply she kissed him, coaxing him to kiss her back, encouraging him to claim her just as she was claiming him. Endlessly, their mouths fused, their tongues tangled, their lips swollen with an insatiable, ravenous hunger to kiss and suck and drink and lap.

She pulled slightly away to murmur into his mouth, “This would be a good time to disappear our clothes like you did last time, ‘Lord Wind’.”

The General already owned my heart before I started Pure Rapture and now he has devastated it. In the best of ways!

I don't tend to get weak when I'm reading romance, but you see... I have an achilles heel when it comes to certain stories. Give me a beautiful, broken, but hopeful warrior of a hero and I become a gelatinous mess. And Tal had everything I love in spades!

This was probably the most heartbreaking story of the series. Each flashback to Tal's past left me reeling. I approached each scene with fear and trepidation. The author did such an incredible job of weaving the history, struggle, romance, and odds of what became of Tal and Ishtar.

I'm declaring here and now... Tal is MINE and I will claw the face (and eyeballs) of anyone who dares to think to take him from me! 😂🤣😂🤣

Pure Rapture by Aja James

⊱ ──────────── 🐾 🐾 🐾 ──────────── ⊰

And then there were all of the answers I got (or could guess at)!! If you don't want spoilers, stop reading this review now!!

Medusa (or I should say Anunit)... this chick was insanely evil! She claimed to love her sister, Ishtar, but this female had no clue how to love. Enlil was devoted to her and she treated him as a slave. She made him her blood mate, but didn't even tie herself to him in return. Then because her sister had the audacity to find someone to love that wasn't her, she manipulated her and events to ruin everyone's lives. Some sister!

From Tal and Ishtar's first precarious meeting through to the sacrifices Tal had to make, all in the name of love... all of it had my heart pounding in anticipation because it knew that the day of reckoning was coming. These two would finally get to the truth of it all. Ishtar would finally see how true Tal has always been. I lived for every tension-filled, remorseful, sensual, and emotional scene between these two. Nothing made me happier than seeing all of Ishtar's feelings of bitterness, betrayal and vengeance faded away in the face of all that was Tal.

Did anyone else scream with joy when Ishtar made Anu submit the first time? How about when she took off half her face and clawed out her eyeballs when they battled a second time? That second fight scene had me rolling!

Seriously, every flashback to Tal's past made me want to cry.

One day, he wished his people could be free. To live without fear. To live for themselves.

When will Inanna being the Light-Bringer become relevant in this series? Will the fact that her mother is also a product of Light and Dark Ones be relevant?

Where the heck is Dalair? And why is it that, other than a casual mention in Sophie's mind, no one seems to be concerned with his absence? Why is no one saying where he is? Why is no one worried?

I still believe that the Creature and Ere are one and the same, now more than ever. Ishtar is a shapeshifter Dark One who gave birth to twins. One is Inanna. The twin boy may be alive out there somewhere. And the Creature is a shapeshifter. Makes sense, right?

I checked into the next book and found out it is about Enlil, which is great, because aside from knowing that he stabbed himself in the heart, destroyed his blood bond with Anu/Medusa, and forgot who he was, I need to know more. Will he remember his past? Will he continue on the path of Light? Will he reunite with Ryu and build some kind of relationship with his son? I've never really seen him as a villain, but more of an anti-hero, and I think I'll continue to like him (I hope).

~ Great Quotes ~

Who are we truly? The one we are born or the one we are made? Where does our path lead? The one with footprints behind us or the one that Destiny laid?

What is written cannot be unwritten, what is said cannot be unsaid. What is remembered can be a vision; Fate can be unwoven by pulling a single thread.

The past is written but incomplete, each story a footprint amongst countless feet. The truth is revealed but only a grain, a speck of sand amongst a vast desert plain.

Dark Pleasures by Aja James

She was starting to glean aspects of his personality and attitude, something she hadn’t really bothered to assess in other people she’d encountered in her life. They simply hadn’t mattered enough for her to make the attempt.
But Devlin was different somehow. He mattered.
He mattered to Grace.

Did I ask to have my mind blown when I went into this book?
Oh... I did?
Well, consider me SHOOK!!

This author is holding me captive with this series. I have other books I'm supposed to be reading. ARCs are piling up and yet... I can't stop myself!

The heroes are divine. The heroines are perfect for their mates. The plots are dynamic, complicated and intriguing. I've been hooked, I am hooked, and I will continue to be hooked until the end!

Devlin was an absolute sweetheart. Until now, I took him as the easygoing, flirty, more approachable member of the Chosen. Now I know better because he is all of those things and more. A perfect gentleman, Devlin was kind and caring, smart and astute, and he was fiercely loyal. He was left a broken man before becoming a Dark One and the lingering pain of his past fed into his present. And then he met Grace.

Grace was not normal, but she was uniquely perfect. With limited social skills and an analytical mind, she approached life like an equation — resolutely, determindly, logically. However, Devlin was an anomaly for her. He didn't fit into a box. He was unlike anyone she had ever met. He couldn't be forgotten. She wanted to have him, be one with him, to claim him, no matter how illogical it seemed.
...this was Grace’s particular dilemma. She was helplessly addicted to everything Devlin.
I loved the way their relationship developed. From their two-week sex arrangement to her wooing of him, these two made magic happen. His open heart and her stunted one were made for each other!
He asked silent questions with his mouth: Do you want me? Not this shell that I wear, but me, the man inside? Can you care for me, hold me when I’m weak, accept the bestial part of me that wants to mark you, claim you for my own?
She answered his mouth with equal fervor and made demands in return: I want you. I want you inside my body, my blood. I want to be inside you too, so deep inside I become a part of you. I want you with a desperation that scares me. So badly I ache when we’re not together. So madly my heart splinters to see you in pain.

I did get some of the answers I was looking for and I couldn't be happier to know that I was right! And if you aren't interested in spoilers, stop reading here...

★ Tal is up and about. I just wish that (a) he could see and (b) he wasn't declining. That ending has left me devastated and I need to keep reading to find out if he's going to be okay. Please, please, please tell me that he and Estelle Martin (aka Mama Bear... aka The Love of His Life) end up together and that they're happy, healthy and whole.
★ Thank you for the glimpse of Ryu. Just knowing about him, Ava and their little Zane made me so happy. And I cannot get enough of this male's blushes!
★ So what's going on with the six degrees of separation?
  • Inanna visited Mama Bear at Dark Dreams
  • Mama Bear gives her baked goods to the Little Flower Orphanage
  • Maria (Grace's aunt) stops in at Dark Dreams, has a rapport with Mama Bear, and works at the orphanage
  • The Creature has a connection to Olivia? - Benji's mom
★ Enlil (Ryu's dad)... why was he killing all of these people? What was to gain from killing Grace's parents? Or little orphan Annie's? And is it just me or is Enlil Naram-Anu actually trying to help? Is that why he sacrificed their blood bond with who I'm guessing is Medusa?
★ oooh... oooh... I can't wait to find out more about the ancient True Blood, Ramses
★ I need to know who Medusa really is, how she's able to control all of these people, and why she's doing it.

How did a two-hundred-thirty-year-old vampire find himself on a blind date with a human female cyber genius?

A remote part of Devlin Sinclair’s mind pondered this question with immense curiosity and astonishment while the rest of him focused on the task at hand.

“That seat is taken.”

The Hunter of the Dark Ones flashed his most engaging and disarming of grins, nearly blinding the occupants of the nearby tables at Raoul’s with its brilliance.

At the very least mesmerizing guests of the female variety.

“Mith, am I right?” he called the woman seated before him by her encrypted chat room handle, knowing full well that her name was actually Grace Elizabeth Darling. Twenty-nine years old, single, and wanted by several government agencies for her cyber hacking skills since the age of twelve.

She tipped her head slightly to one side and gave him a slow, meticulous, dispassionate appraisal from head to toe.

As if he were the restaurant’s special menu for the evening, and she found every item on the list less than appetizing.

“You’re not Azor Ahai,” she stated with absolute certainty.

Devlin mentally rolled his eyes and stifled a sigh.

No, he was not the Prince Who Was Promised, according to George R.R. Martin’s magnum opus A Song of Ice and Fire.

He wasn’t even the man who used the name as his online handle in the chat room where he occasionally traded conversational volleys with Grace.

No, Devlin Sinclair, Marquess of Hartington in his human life, was the royal henchman to the New England vampire queen Jade Cicada.

Devlin had in the past few months painstakingly insinuated himself into the role of Grace Darling’s chat room flirtation so that he could track the elusive cyber genius down in the flesh.

“I am,” Devlin said presently, blinking his eyes with innocence and injecting a slightly wounded look into his countenance at her immediate rejection of his identity.

She stared unblinkingly back at him, her expression unsmiling and devoid of any emotion.

“I expected you to be balding and pudgy, and maybe a foot shorter,” she said.

“There are no pictures of me anywhere, I made sure of that,” Devlin pointed out, though he knew that the real man was in fact as she described.

He’d chosen to get closer to her through this particular identity precisely because the man suffered from extreme paranoia and took care never to leave traces of himself. Who better to impersonate than a ghost on the Net and an invisible man in real life?

That, and the fact that he engaged in far more conversations and commanded more minutes of Grace’s time than anyone else in cyber space, where she lived for fourteen out of her sixteen waking hours each day, ostensibly as the work-from-home Enterprise Architect at the hottest new tech startup Zenn.

It was a stroke of pure luck that Grace herself initiated this face-to-face meeting just as Devlin almost gave up on tracing her, though his own digital abilities were substantial.

But not as good as hers.

“I hacked some satellite images and filtered the distortion. I got one of you walking through Central Park while eating a Big Mac a couple of weeks ago.”

There was no accusation or apology in her voice. She simply stated a fact and waited for him to refute or confirm.

Huh.

Devlin had to admire her resourcefulness, but he was not surprised. He would have expected no less given her skills.

“I must have had some sun glinting off my hair that day, which you mistook for the bald spot, and I was bundled in a heavy coat, which probably made me look a bit…fluffier,” he suggested smoothly.

“It was nighttime.”

“How forgetful of me,” he corrected with another flash of teeth, but she didn’t seem the least bit distracted by their brilliant whiteness.

“It was the light from the street lamps, not the sun.”

She made no reply.

Instead, she unhurriedly took her napkin from her lap, put it back on the table, pushed her chair back, slung a small backpack onto one shoulder and got up to leave.

Devlin thought fast.

“How is Miu-Miu?”

She paused and looked up at him, her expression still a neutral mask.

“And Antony and Cleopatra?”

Devlin quickly glanced at his watch, quickly because he didn’t trust her not to disappear in a puff of smoke if he took his eyes off her for even a millisecond.

“You don’t need to go home to feed them for another few hours. Let’s sit down and have our dinner, shall we? I, for one, am famished.”

She stood there regarding him with that fathomless dark stare, and Devlin would have given half his considerable fortune to know what she was thinking.

He read people very easily; it was one of his many natural gifts. But this woman was a Sphinx as far as he was concerned.

Perhaps because in order for a human book to be read, there had to be emotional signatures, but in Grace’s case, there was only cold logic. Encrypted cold logic.

Seeing that she was hesitant enough to at least remain stationary rather than dash out the door and disappear without a trace, Devlin pushed his luck further by walking around her and pulling out her chair again.

“Please do take a seat. This is your favorite restaurant, isn’t it? It took some doing to get a reservation. I would hate to waste it.”

He held his position for several seconds, one hand on the arm of her chair, one hand ever so lightly settling on her shoulder to guide her into the chair, while she considered her options.

But really, any choice she thought she had was an illusion.

Now that Devlin had seen her in the flesh, she would only escape him if he allowed it.

The Hunter never lost his prey.

Dark Desires by Aja James

To desire was to want. To want was to expose oneself to weakness. Weakness that could be used to bring endless pain and torment. And it all began with pleasure.
Pleasure was addictive. Pleasure spawned desire.
Ryu felt deep in his bones that Ava Monroe was pleasure incarnate. She should wear a sign that said: "This way lies folly. Trespass at your own risk."
She was dangerous to his peace of mind. He could not afford to be distracted by her.
Not when he might need to end her life.

I. Am. TELLING YOU... read this series!!

There's Ryu, a shadow assassin and member of the Queen's Chosen. He's tasked with annihilating the threat to his kind that has popped up in Japan. Ava is his way in, a target, and someone he didn't expect to affect him so strongly.
"What do you want from me?" he rasped huskily, his mouth a hair's breadth from hers.
She thought of saying something flippant or flirty, but couldn't come up with anything but the truth:
"Everything," she whispered.
A sharp indrawn breath, and then —
Heaven.
As his mouth covered hers, hot and delicious.
I absolutely adored the way the author explored these characters. Ava is a socially awkward genius who speaks her mind, even when it's cause for embarrassment. Ryu is a sweet, broken man who can't see how truly worthy he is. Ava brings out the best in him and he in her. Their love is almost instantaneous and energetic and profound. Their connection was brilliant and I enjoyed every moment spent with them and experiencing their firsts.
I'd give my life for you, she heard his voice in her head, in her blood, as he continued to hold her gaze. I have never known love before you. Never loved in return. And I never shall love any woman but you.
My only regret was that Ryu's mom's death wasn't a prolonged, tortuous affair. That woman deserved no mercy!

While this book gave me some answers (YES TO INANNA FINDING HER FATHER), I'm still left with so many questions, such as:
  1. Will Tal get his sight back?
  2. Again... is the glamoured Mama Bear Inanna's mom/Tal's mate? I remembered this burning question because Tal featured so heavily here.
  3. Will Tal reunite with his mate (so he doesn't decline and die) or will she turn him away?
  4. WTH is going on with Ryu's dad? Will we see him again? Will he remain an enemy?
  5. This Medusa chick... how is she around, doing her thing, and NO ONE knows her? These ancient beings have never come across her? How???
  6. The Creature didn't feature, but I'm still questioning if he's Inanna's lost brother. I would love a family reunion (mom, dad, sister, brother).

Honestly, I'm sure I have more questions and concerns burrowed in my subconscious, but it doesn't even matter. I WILL be reading the next book. I WILL be seeking more and more answers. I WILL fall deeper and deeper in love with this series and these characters. If you're a fan of paranormal romance, sick action scenes, and combustible chemistry between glorious people, you need to read these books!

“Since turning vampire, I’ve made killing my exclusive profession,” he continued smoothly, almost bored, as if talking about something as mundane as the weather.

“I’m exceedingly good at it. My moniker among my Kind is Assassin. Not very inventive, is it? But fitting nevertheless. I have many weapons at my disposal, f*cking included, to get what I want.”

She came to him then, chased him across the length of the room.

Shaking. Her body was shaking with emotion.

He wondered detachedly whether she was going to strike him for his hateful words. He’d purposely demeaned what had just happened between them a short while ago. He wanted her to hate him. It was an emotion he understood well.

“Don’t say such things about yourself,” she whispered, still shaking, her eyes wide and sorrowful.

“It’s all true,” he said carelessly, his expression sardonic. “I have never pretended otherwise.”

Her hands rose, and he almost pulled back. But he made himself stay still.

She was just a human female, he told himself. He was not afraid of her.

Her hands fell again, and he thought she would turn away now, her illusions about him, about what she felt, obliterated by reality.

Instead, she gently, inexorably unfolded his arms and wrapped her own around his waist as she laid her cheek against his chest, right against his heart as it beat almost frantically within its cage.

“I hear you,” she murmured, acknowledging his confession. She rubbed her cheek against his skin and nuzzled her nose in the center of his chest, inhaling deeply, then rested her cheek there again.

For long moments she simply held him, offering her warmth, offering unconditional affection, and he felt protected. He, the Assassin, felt protected by a slip of a human female who made Bambi look tough.

He felt increasing panic at how in such a short period of time, he had come to depend on her. How much he wanted and needed her. The pleasure she represented and gave him made him all the more aware of the pain that he had always carried within.

This was what his Master had warned him of. This weakness and vulnerability brought about by pleasure. By desire.

“I hear you,” she repeated softly against his chest.

Then she looked up into his eyes and caught him in an unguarded moment, her eyes bright and intense with emotion.

“I see you,” she said, and he almost believed she could look directly into his soul.

“I love what I see, Ryu Takamura. I love you.”

He inhaled sharply and was suddenly furious. Why did she keep pushing him? Why didn’t she run away? Couldn’t she tell he was a monster? A killer?

“You will realize one day that you’ve wasted your emotions on me,” he told himself as much as he was telling her. “You will regret this.”

“Maybe,” she conceded, “but emotions are not things one can bring to heel like a good little terrier, at least mine aren’t that way. And I have always been taught to trust my instincts and be honest with myself and the people around me. If I died tomorrow and didn’t tell you how I feel, that's what I'd regret more."

She hugged him tighter and rose on tiptoe to brush her lips against his throat.

"May I have you, Ryu? For a little while if not forever?"

She kissed his chin and his jaw.

"I want to be yours too," she added, in case he was in any doubt. "For as long as you're willing to have me."

“Every story has more than one side, like a crystal that captures and reflects different colors of light. Do not take for granted what you think you know, for until you hold the entire jewel in your palm, the temptation is to fall prey to illusion and deception.”

This is a story of the Dark Ones…

Inanna: the vampire warrior

Known as the Angel of Death among her kind, she has lived millennia alone, one of the remaining True Bloods in existence, unconsciously longing for the one male she could never have.

Gabriel: the forbidden human

His soul recognizes hers from the first encounter. With the first touch, he is awakened. Though he does not know it, he has been searching for her across the ages.

I'm telling you... if you are a fan of paranormal romance, you need to get on the Pure/Dark Ones train!

Dark Longing was primarily about Inanna and Gabriel and it was beautiful! The way the author created their love against the backdrop of history (kudos on creating that history btw) and linked it to the present and gave their growing relationship depth, foundation, and a past... How could I not fall in love with these particular characters?!

The mysterious theme that was introduced in book one was still being explored here and I'm still left guessing about who is behind all the anarchy and mayhem amidst the Dark and Pure communities. Who is the creature? Who else is allied with it? And how will the author keep me on my toes in the next book? I'm so excited to find out!

This review wouldn't be complete if I didn't include my rambles and questions and ponderings too. If you don't want to be spoiled, stop reading here!

★ I loved Inanna and Gabriel's story! I loved how the author created their background, highlighted the Dark vs. Pure Ones war, and even the idea of reincarnation. I'm curious about who Inanna's parents are. To be born of a Dark and Pure One... I'm hoping this is explored further. I found the scenes of the past to be full of hope and heartbreak.
★ Why did Inanna and Gabriel brush off Benji's description of Mama Bear? Why not explore the possibility that he was right, especially as we know that there is a shapeshifter in their midst? Why not explore why this woman would disguise herself as an old woman and why a boy could see past this disguise? Is she Inanna's mom?
★ While Jade Cicada fascinates me... I'm not a fan of how she's depicted, especially when it comes to sex. If she is supposed to be eventually paired with Seth (which is what is hinted at), I'd like her to be a bit more into him. Having sex with a ton of men in front of him doesn't exactly warm me up to their union. And why the heck is he allowing it? I need to learn more about Blood Contracts.
★ I get that what's happening between Sophia and Ere is supposed to feed the story in some way, but it only annoys me. I get that she's supposed to be naive to normal human interpersonal relationships, but that doesn't mean she has to be stupid and immature. Shoot, I'm naive sometimes too! But she was raised by the Elite. I'm supposed to believe that nothing about Ere and what he does seemed suspicious to her? To her guards?

... her curiosity about him and the desire to see him overruled what few reservations she had. - Bitch be crazy

★ I think the shapeshifter creature thing may be Inanna's lost brother, the one who is supposed to be dead. Could the creature be Ere? I can't wait to learn it all!!

Vampire.

That is what I and my Kind are called.

Bloodsucker. Demon. Devil’s Spawn. Fiend. Incubus.

Monster.

I cannot say whether I am or am not these things.

I suppose it depends on one’s point of view.

To the humans whose blood, and sometimes souls, I take for survival, I suppose I might appear somewhat… dangerous. But it is all a matter of perspective.

So allow me to give you mine.

I was born. I was not made.

Nor am I a Pure One who chose the so-called Darkness over an excruciating death when they surrendered their love to the wrong person.

I am simply, and always have been, as I am.

There have been times, oh so many times in the millennia that I have lived, that I resented, raged, railed against my existence.

To the Goddess. To the Heavens. To the Universe at large.

But it wasn’t always that way.

I was born into privilege and luxury. Royalty, even.

There was a time, all those thousands of years ago, when vampires ruled the earth. Pure Ones were inferior chattel and humans were our livestock.

And then the Great War reversed the balance of power.

History, as they say, is written by the victors.

And now I and my Kind are hunted like vermin by the very creatures who used to kneel at our feet. There are also human factions who know of us (or at least think they know) and target us for extermination, torture, experimentation, even just for the sport of it. What was once the most powerful civilization the world has ever seen is now in crumbled ruins, its noble citizens degenerating over time into renegades, thieves, lawless parasites.

Few of us True Bloods remain.

Most have either perished in the Great War or in the Purge of the aftermath. Over time, Pure Ones who have lost their faith joined our ranks.

And in this new era, vampires can also be made.

It is this last type of predator that we should all guard ourselves against, for they have no compunction, no morals.

Only thirst.

Never-ending, unquenchable thirst for the blood and souls of others.

But this is no longer my concern—this galactic battle between Good and Evil. I ceased to care which was good and which, evil, the day that he betrayed me. I only live for my daughter and son.

My beloved Dark Ones...

Brilliant... Beautiful... and WOW!! With Pure Healing, Aja James has officially earned a spot on my must-read list!

This book, or rather this series, is about exquisite fallen angels and their battle to defend and protect humankind. I loved it!!

The World-Building: while their base was in Boston, the Pure Ones got around. In existence for millenia, they've lived together, fought together, and loved together. I enjoyed the mythos that served as the history to this wonderful group of characters. From ancient Rome to ancient China to Amazons and humans... it was impossible not to become engrossed in the texture the author created with her imaginative embellishments.

The Characters: Rain and Valerius were the main characters, but everyone got a piece of the shine and I'm intrigued by them all. I wish some of them didn't have to die so I could get to know them better and see them get their very own happy endings. Anyhoo, what developed between Rain and Valerius was surreal. It was sensual and captivating and an ethereal feel to it. I got so much of them and still craved more.

The Plot: it was obvious to me that there are many moving parts to this story and while I'm unsure how the author keeps track of it all, it was never confusing. For every question answered, every secret revealed, more clues are left behind hinting at something more to come. So I may not know everything yet, but I'll be having a blast trying to learn it all!

And this review wouldn't be complete if I didn't share my notes/questions/frustrations with you all, so here goes:
⭐ Why was Sophia's character such a brat? Am I not supposed to like her? With the many books to come, I'm sure her character will grow and evolve and hopefully I won't hate her in the end.
⭐ Cloud... I can't be the only one looking forward to finding out more about this male.
⭐I really thought something was brewing (romantically) between Xandros and Wan'er. Was I the only one who thought so? Why tease us with something so sweet only to obliterate any chance of it ever happening???
⭐ What is happening between Jade and Seth? Can Dark Ones be with Pure Ones? There's definitely something there.
⭐ Who and/or what is the entity that has been toying with them for the entire book? That shapeshifting thing was freaky. Who was the final shape they took that pushed Dalair to confess his heart's desire?
⭐ Is it just my imagination or does Ere seem to have something to do with the darkness building in this book? Is he the shapeshifter manipulating everyone?

I have absolutely no patience so I'm off to find out what happens next in Dark Longing.

Valerius’ eyes were immediately drawn to the feminine outline behind the curtains.

Contrary to his training and protocol, he barely registered the surrounding area, the ornate yet elegant furniture, the walls covered entirely with natural scenery that looked just as real and alive as the scrolls in the outer passageway, the whimsical splattering of multi-colored round paper lanterns across the ceiling, giving the chamber a cheerful glow.

To his utter confusion and dismay, his heart doubled its tempo, and every nerve in his body became overwhelmingly sensitized. He suddenly felt drugged by the faint, elusive fragrance of lilies and jasmine, and in reaction, blood rushed to his groin, hardening him in an instant. His neck and face got what was left as he flushed deeply in mortification and anger at his total loss of discipline.

In his two thousand plus years of existence as a Pure One, he had never, never, lost control. Why his self-restraint deserted him now he couldn’t begin to fathom and didn’t have the luxury to even try, for he suddenly found himself not two feet before the Healer, sitting above him on the dais on a soft pedestal of pillows. He executed a bow by rote, as if his body had developed a mind of its own.

Valerius stopped short of raising his gaze to meet hers, however. He knew that keeping his eyes lowered was a sign of submission which he’d never before allowed in himself, no matter the odds he faced. But he swallowed his pride and locked his jaw, because somehow, somewhere deep within, he knew that meeting her gaze would change his world forever.

Instead, he peered through the filter of his lashes at the shape of her chin, and the enigmatic, fleeting smile that tilted the corners of her full, sensuous mouth.

“Warrior,” she greeted him softly, pausing a heavy beat after greeting Sophia and Ayelet.

When he continued to withhold his gaze, the corners of her lips tilted ever so slightly more, as if she were amused by his reticence.

But it wasn’t shyness that kept Valerius’ eyes lowered; it was self-preservation.
